Sora is dead.
Not slowly declining, but killed by OpenAI itself. Announced shutdown on March 24th, app discontinued April 26th, API limped along until September 24th. A product that once made the entire creative industry hold its breath lasted just six months from launch to death.
Burning $1 million daily, users dropped from 3.33 million to under 500k, 30-day retention fell to single digits.
Disney had a $1 billion partnership deal and got notified less than an hour before the public announcement. Sam Altman’s logic was simple: Sora was hemorrhaging money, Anthropic was eating market share, GPUs were scarce. Cut it.
So now the question is: where do you migrate all those Sora prompts, workflows, and muscle memory?
I spent two weeks testing the four most viable alternatives. No rankings, no false neutrality. Just the real experience with each tool.
Runway Gen-4.5: Quality Ceiling, Price Ceiling Too
Bottom line first: if you only care about visual quality, Runway has no competition right now.
Gen-4.5 solved the biggest problem in AI video: temporal consistency. That early AI video issue where faces morph when turning or backgrounds wobble like jelly is basically gone in Gen-4.5.
A character turns their head, gestures, speaks. Facial features stay consistent throughout. Buildings don’t warp when the camera moves. Fabric texture, skin detail, wood grain all remain physically correct frame by frame.
What does this mean? It means a 5-second city skyline shot from Gen-4.5 can be cut directly into real footage and audiences won’t notice.
Camera control is Runway’s other killer feature. You can specify the direction, speed, and angle of push, pull, pan, and tilt movements. Not “generate me a cool video” but “slow push to character close-up, background blur.” This is director language, not prompt engineer language.
Motion Brush deserves mention too. Paint motion paths directly on the frame, make the dog run in a specific direction, make leaves fall in a particular pattern. This level of fine control doesn’t exist in other tools yet.
The problem is price.
Runway pricing structure:

On the Pro plan, generating 60 seconds of highest quality video costs about $7.50, or $0.125 per second.
Expensive? Yes. But if you’re a professional creator delivering to clients, one 5-second shot might save you thousands in production costs. The math works out.
For social media creators though, $76/month just to post a few short videos feels excessive.
Best for: Professional film production, ad agencies, creators with uncompromising quality requirements. Not for daily content creators or budget-conscious individuals.
Kling 3.0: Best Value, But Has a Temper
Kuaishou launched Kling 3.0 on February 5th, three days before ByteDance’s Seedance 2.0. This wasn’t coincidence. The Chinese AI video arms race is in full swing.
What’s Kling 3.0’s biggest selling point? The free tier is generous.
66 credits daily, non-cumulative. Doesn’t sound like much? Do the math: 5-second standard video costs 10 credits, you can generate 6 per day. 10-second standard video costs 20 credits, 3 per day. For testing and casual use, this free allowance is the most generous among all tools.
Paid plans are competitive too:
- Standard: $6.99/month, 660 credits/month (plus daily 66 free credits)
- Pro: $29.99/month, 3000 credits/month
- Ultra: $59.99/month, 8000 credits/month, supports Ultra HD
On the Pro plan, generating 60 seconds costs about $4.50, or $0.075 per second. That’s 60% of Runway’s price.
Feature-wise, Kling 3.0 has several impressive highlights.
Native multilingual audio generation. Generate lip-synced audio directly from text prompts in Chinese, English, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish. No external audio files needed, no post-production lip sync work. For creators doing multilingual content, this feature saves real time.
4K output has arrived. The Image 3.0 model can render 2K and 4K stills, video supports 60fps at Ultra tier. Texture detail and lighting are qualitatively better than the previous generation.
Text rendering is Kling’s hidden advantage. Signs, brand logos, price tags remain legible in generated videos. Anyone who used Sora knows how hard it is to keep text readable in AI video. For e-commerce and marketing content teams, this alone makes Kling worth choosing.
But Kling has its pitfalls.
Free tier is 720p only, watermarked, peak queue times can exceed 30 minutes. During testing I waited 47 minutes once.
Failed generations still deduct credits. This is the most complained-about issue. You spend credits, wait forever, get unusable output, no refund.
Character consistency is much better than previous generations, but maintaining the same character appearance across multiple segments still fails sometimes. Usable, but don’t expect perfection.
Best for: Budget-conscious creators with high volume needs, social media operations, e-commerce teams, international teams needing multilingual content.
Pika 2.5: Fast, Cheap, But Don’t Expect Too Much
Pika’s positioning is clear: speed and ease of use first, quality good enough is good enough.
Stanford team founded, raised $135 million, valued at $470 million. 500k daily users generating content. The numbers look good.
But the 1.6-star rating on Trustpilot with 87% one-star reviews doesn’t look as good.
Start with the positives. Pika generates short clips (3-5 seconds) fast, interface is clean, zero learning curve. Rich effects toolkit: Pikaframes for frame interpolation, Pikaswaps for element replacement, Pikaffects for style filters. For social media short content, these little tools are practical.
Pricing is also the most affordable among the four:

Where’s the catch?
Free tier can’t use Pika 2.5. The quality you experience on free tier is completely different from paid tier. It’s like test driving a base model then discovering the premium version is a different beast.
Credit consumption is opaque. Resolution, duration, features used all vary wildly in cost. One usable video might cost 10 credits or 50+ credits. Combined with failed generations still deducting credits, the Standard tier’s 700 credits actually produces 10-30 usable videos, at $0.33-$1.00 per video.
Quality-wise, simple scenes are okay, complex scenes (multiple people, complex motion) often produce weird deformations and artifacts. The gap with Runway isn’t small.
Lip sync feature Pikaformance supports up to 30 seconds at 720p. Simple dialogue works, complex speech looks fake.
Pika’s real positioning is as a fast production line for social media content. You need lots of 3-5 second video clips, stylization over realism, tight budget? Pika works. You need to deliver anything to clients? Use a different tool.
Best for: Social media creators, short video bloggers, content teams needing lots of stylized material. Not for professional production or commercial delivery.
Vidu 2.0: China’s Value Dark Horse
Vidu is a product from Shengshu Technology, less known domestically than Kling but quietly building a user base overseas.
Vidu’s core competitive advantage is one word: cheap.
Look at the numbers:
- Free: 80 credits/month, 720p, 8-second limit, watermarked
- Standard: $9.99/month, 500 credits, 1080p, 16-second limit
- Pro: $29.99/month, 2000 credits, 1080p, 32-second limit, Cinema quality tier
Pro plan generating 60 seconds of Cinema quality video costs about $2.03, or $0.034 per second.
Compare: Runway at $0.125 per second, Kling at $0.075 per second, Pika at about $0.083 per second. Vidu’s unit cost is one-quarter of Runway’s, half of Kling’s.
32-second single-segment generation is also a differentiating advantage. Runway and Kling’s single generation limit is 10-15 seconds, Pika even shorter. If you need longer continuous shots, Vidu saves stitching hassles.
Character consistency and style transfer are Vidu 2.0’s strengths. Same character maintains appearance across different segments, reliable for series content and brand content.
Physics engine unlocks at Pro tier. Physical simulation realism beats Pika but still trails Runway.
Credits also roll over: Standard can roll 200 max, Pro can roll 1000 max. This design is much more humane than “expire at month end.”
Vidu’s shortcomings are obvious.
Interface and toolchain maturity doesn’t match Runway. No fine control tools like Motion Brush, no multilingual audio generation like Kling.
Weak ecosystem integration. Runway seamlessly connects to Premiere and DaVinci Resolve workflows, Vidu is basically a standalone web tool.
Maximum 1080p support (Enterprise can request 2K), no 4K. For scenarios requiring high-resolution delivery, this is a hard limitation.
Community and tutorial resources are scarce. When you hit problems, you’re mostly on your own.
Best for: Extremely budget-conscious creators, users needing long segment generation, teams doing character series content, people wanting to test AI video at lowest cost.
So Which One Should You Choose?
Don’t jump to conclusions. Ask yourself three questions first:
